Renowned Classical Vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar Passes Away At 80

Pandit Prabhakar Karekar died in Mumbai following a brief illness, his family said on Thursday.

Noted classical vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar breathed his last on Wednesday night, February 12, at his residence in Shivaji Park, Mumbai following a brief illness, reported PTI. The news of his demise was confirmed by his family in a statement on Thursday, February 13. Karekar was 80.

Born in Goa, Karekar was a great vocalist and a very good teacher. The renowned vocalist received training under Pandit Suresh Haldankar, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and Pandit CR Vyas. He was a graded artist on the All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan.

He was known for his renditions like Bolava Vithal Pahava Vithal and Vakratund Mahakay.

He also did fusion music with Ornette Coleman and Sultan Khan.

Some of his noteworthy musical works include Trith Vithal Kshetra Vithal Vithal Geete, Kshan Ek Mana, Aselshwaranchachi Jo, Mayajaval Naase Ya Naame, Vedaneche Val Hechi Maze Bal, Siddhi Vinayaka Siddheshwari, Vimal Adhar Nikati Moh Ha Papi, Vighnahar Tu Ozaricha, and Karita Vichar Sapadle Varma.

Karekar was honoured with several top awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, Tansen Samman, and Gomant Vibhushan award.

He is survived by three sons.
