The World Earth Day is bein celebrated this year with the theme of 'Our Power, Our Planet' calling for the use of cleaner energy by 2030.
Everyone around the world is gathering to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, a mass mobilising event urging a call for action by using cleaner energy and ensuring a sustainable environment. The theme for this year is “Our Power, Our Planet” that sets priorities in context. The theme sets out with the aim of tripling the amount of clean electricity that we produce by 2030.
The push for renewable energy is congruent with the increasing initiatives across the globe that promote sustainable energy. India, for example hosts the India Power and Renewable Conference that serves as a uniting platform for stakeholders across the energy value chain aiding in promoting the clean energy motive.
Earth day is celebrated to mobilise the environmental campaigns everywhere while also spreading awareness regarding the impending climate catastrophes we are driven towards. The event was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and a Harvard Graduate student Denis Hayes in 1970. It was globalized in 1990 with participation of over 200 million people from more than 140 countries.
The significance of earth day lies in raising environmental consciousness among everyone. Each theme every year tries tackling issues like deforestation and clean energy production for a cleaner future. It pushes the environmental authorities in devising and implementing policies that align with sustainable goals going forward.
Antonique Smith, a Grammy-nominated singer and long time climate activist is appointed as the ambassador to further the theme set this year. Co-founder and CEO of the non-profit Climate Revival, Smith will be aiding the effort with a live performance of “Love song to the earth” in Times Square in New York City.
