Cobie Smulders, born Jacoba Francisca Maria Smulders on April 3, 1982, is a Canadian actress best known for her roles in television and film. She gained widespread recognition as Robin Scherbatsky in the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014) and as Maria Hill, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with The Avengers (2012).
Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Cobie Smulders comes from a diverse background, with a Dutch father and a British mother. She grew up in White Rock, British Columbia, and later moved to West Point Grey, a neighborhood in Vancouver, where she attended Lord Byng Secondary School. Named after her great-aunt, Cobie picked up her nickname early on. She has four sisters and was an active child, even participating in the Girl Guides of Canada as a Brownie.
Initially, Smulders dreamed of becoming a marine biologist, but her interest in theater grew during high school. She briefly studied at the University of Victoria before deciding to focus entirely on acting.
Before stepping into the world of acting, Smulders worked as a model, though she later admitted that she didn’t enjoy the experience. She found it frustrating to be judged solely on her appearance and welcomed the opportunity to transition into acting, where she could express her thoughts and emotions.

Cobie Smulders is a big fan of the Vancouver Canucks hockey team. Despite her success in Hollywood, she has always maintained a strong connection to her Canadian roots.
In January 2025, tragedy struck when the home she shared with her family in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, was destroyed in a wildfire.
