Ruby Rose Langenheim, known professionally as Ruby Rose, is an Australian actress, model, television presenter, and DJ. Born in Melbourne, Australia, she was raised by her single mother, Katia Langenheim, an artist, and spent her early years moving frequently between rural Victoria, Tasmania, and Surfers Paradise before settling back in Melbourne. Her great-grandparents were German actress Ellen Bang and Australian soldier Alec Campbell, the last surviving Australian of the Battle of Gallipoli. Rose began her career in the public eye as a model, finishing as runner-up in a national model search, and later became a popular MTV VJ. She also served as a host for various television shows, including Australia's Next Top Model and The Project. Rose began her acting career in 2008 and made her breakthrough after being cast in the third season of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black in 2015. This role led to opportunities in several action films such as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and John Wick: Chapter 2. In 2018, Rose was cast as Batwoman, making her the first openly lesbian superhero lead in television history. She is openly gender fluid and a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
