The coalition was formed with the strategic aim of keeping the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) out of power after it stunned many by finishing second in the election. The outgoing coalition government of SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed on November 6. Scholz himself will not be part of the new cabinet but will stay on in parliament as a lawmaker.
