After US President Donald Trump staetd that Washington is in direct talks with Iran over the nuclear programme, Tehran has come forward and stated that it will not participate in direct negotiations.
Taking to X, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that the US and Iran will meet in Oman for "indirect high-level talks."
"It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America's court," the minister added.
This statement goes against Trump's demand that Iran enter direct talks with the US over its nuclear programme, or risk being bombed.
"We're having direct talks with Iran, and they've started. It'll go on Saturday. We have a very big meeting, and we'll see what can happen. And I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable," Trump said.
The distinction between direct and indirect talks does not hold much weightage at first glance. However, it is important to note that indirect negotiations with Iran have led nowhere, especially after Trump withdrew from the 2018 nuclear deal during his first term as president.
Trump's warning of military action against Iran comes as US forces continue to strike alleged Houthi targets in Yemen.
Trump first approached Iran for talks on March 5 after he wrote a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In his letter, Trump told reporters that he warned of taking military action against Iran if it refused to come to the table and negotiate.
"I’ve written them a letter saying, ‘I hope you’re going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily, it라이브 바카라 going to be a terrible thing,'" Trump told reporters.
However, Trump's letter triggered a negative reaction as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected direct negotiations.
"We don’t avoid talks; it라이브 바카라 the breach of promises that has caused issues for us so far,” Pezeshkian said in televised remarks, adding that the US "must prove that they can build trust.”
Iran's Supreme Leader also did not take Trump's letter well.
“They threaten to commit acts of mischief, but we are not entirely certain that such actions will take place. We do not consider it highly likely that trouble will come from the outside. However, if it does, they will undoubtedly face a strong retaliatory strike," the supreme leader said.
