Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to visit India soon. As per the statement made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, arrangements are underway for Putin's visit.
As reported by state agency TASS, Lavrov was quoted as saying - "Arrangements are currently being made for Putin to visit India."
This will be Vladimir Putin's first visit to India since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022.
Speaking to reporters, Lavrov added that Russia is working towards strengthening its ties with major global powers, including India, which shares a "privileged strategic partnership" with Moscow.
Putin's visit to India also comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made two visits to Russia - in July 2024 and in October 2024 for the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan.
Putin has made zero to little global visits since the start of the war in Ukraine. This is due to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against the Russian President for war crimes.
Since this arrest warrant was issued in 2023, Vladimir Putin has visited non-ICC member countries to evade this arrest. India is another such country.
Since India is not a member of the International Criminal Court as it did not sign or ratify the Rome Statute of 1998, New Delhi is not obligated to hand over Putin to the ICC authorities.
