President Vladimir Putin has announced a three-day ceasefire. As per the statement from the Kremlin, Russia has declared a truce period from May 8 to May 11.
Moscow has also called on Ukraine to declare the same.
As per a report by the Moscow Times, Putin has unilaterally called for this ceasefire in honour of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
Victory Day marks the end of the Second World War. In Russia, the day is marked on May 8, marking victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany.
As per the Kremlin statement, the ceasefire has been declared "out of humanitarian considerations."
"Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of ceasefire violations by Ukraine, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will respond appropriately and effectively," read the statement issued by the Kremlin.
Moscow added that it “reaffirms its readiness for peace negotiations without preconditions, aimed at addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and engaging constructively with international partners.”
The last time a ceasefire in the Ukraine war was declared was for Easter Sunday. However, just as the ceasefire began, a Russian strike killed 36 people, including children in the Ukranian city of Sumy.
Ukrainian officials, President Zelenskyy are yet to respond.
This is a developing story...
