With Mexico reportedly refusing a US military plane landing to a federal judge in Seattle blocking the executive order to end birthright citizenship, Trump's immigration overhaul has begun to face various hurdles.
Days after Donald Trump took oath as the 47th President of the United States, the Republican leader signed an executive order bringing an end to birthright citizenship for immigrants in the country. However, almost a week into his second term, Trump's immigration overhaul has faced various hurdles.
After implementing a national emergency across the southern border and stated that the country would work towards a "Remain in Mexico" policy.
However, days after signing the order titled - PROTECTING THE MEANING AND VALUE OF AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP - not only was Trump sued by 22 states, but a federal judge in Seattle temporarily blocked this order.
Adding to Trump's hurdles, Mexico has reportedly refused to allow US military "deportation" planes to land in Mexico.
Trump's "remove the aliens" idea has continued to receive backlash, especially from Mexico. As per a report by Reuters, the Mexican government has turned down deportation planes from the United States and said it will not allow any such planes to land in Mexico,
One of Trump's main goals since the first term in 2016 has been to "make America great again" by removing "aliens and terrorists" from US soil.
During his first presidency, the Republican leader faced major backlash for his deportation campaigns and detention camps in southern US states. However, that has not stopped Trump from doing the same a second time around.
Citing a Mexican official, Reuters reported that the US military aircraft deporting migrants was not allowed to land in Mexico.
Trump's "Remain in Mexico" plan requires migrants to stay in Mexico until their asylum request is approved or denied. However, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said she has not agreed to accept non-Mexican migrants who are seeking asylum in the United States.
"When it comes to repatriations, we will always accept the arrival of Mexicans to our territory with open arms," the Mexican foreign ministry said on Trump's policy but did not comment on the US military plane being turned back.
While President Sheinbaum has sought dialogue with the new US government, she spoke up against the mass deportations and stated that Mexican immigrants are vital to the US economy.
US District Judge John Coughenour in Seattle has granted a temporary restraining order against Trump's executive order. With this, the federal judge has halted enforcement of the policy for 14 days while the court considers a preliminary injunction.
The order, signed by Trump on his first day back, directs federal agencies to deny citizenship to children born in the US to immigrants who are illegal, undocumented or in the US on a temporary visa.
Judge Coughenour, who has been appointed by former Republican president Ronald Reagan, stated that the executive order is "blatantly unconstitutional."
"I am having trouble understanding how a member of the bar could state unequivocally that this order is constitutional," said Coughenour as the Justice Department attorney defended the Trump administration's position on the matter.
