One Nation, One Election Tabled In Lok Sabha

The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024' and 'The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024', which propose simultaneous elections for both Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The bills were introduced in Lok Sabha by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Opposition parties and Congress have opposed the bill and stated that the bills were "an assault on federalism and the basic structure of the Constitution".

After the introduction of the bill, Opposition members pressed for a division, marking the first use of the electronic voting system in the Parliament.

In this division, the bills received 269 votes in favour and 198 votes against. The bills will now be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberations.
