According to a report by NDTV, wheat purchases by private players reached nearly 1 lakh tonnes within two weeks of the current rabi, or winter crop, marketing season that opened on April 1 -- accounting for 6 per cent of the total wheat purchases till Wednesday. Government agencies including Punsup, Punjab State Warehousing Corporation, Markfed and the Food Corporation of India among others have purchased nearly 16.8 lakh tonnes of wheat. As per a statement by the Punjab government, the total wheat purchases have also broken a 15-year record.
