India Shuts Attari Border: History and Trade Implications

In response to the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 tourists, the Cabinet committee on security announced several measures that restricts travel from Pakistan. One of the measures to limit the cross border movement announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Wednesday was the closure of the Integrated Check Post at Attari. In addition, the suspension of the SAARC Visa extension scheme has further solidified the government라이브 바카라 resolve to seal all formal channels of entry from the neighbouring nation.

Historical Crossing 

The Attari-Wagah border situated near Attari in India and Wagah in Pakistan is the only authorised trade route between the two nations and is also India라이브 바카라 first land port. The border, located 28 kilometres from Amritsar, is known for its traditional ceremony known as the Beating Retreat Ceremony is carried out by the security forces of both nations every day since 1959. The crossing is also symbolic as border troops from both sides exchange sweets and greetings on significant festivals like Eid and Diwali as a gesture of respect.  

Impact 

The border plays an imperative role in facilitating cross-border trade that has been on decline since 2018. The 120 acres border directly connects to National highway 1 and also aids in bilateral trade with Afghanistan. 

According to reports, bilateral trade amounting to Rs. 3,886.53 crore along with 6871 cargo movements and 71,563 passenger crossings was recorded in 2023-24. Exports from India include soybean, vegetables, red chillies, plastic dana, plastic yarn and chicken feed whereas Pakistan delivers dry fruits, dry dates, cement glass, rock salt, gypsum and various herbs. 

The already tumultuous relations between both nations have received strict reciprocation from the Indian side as it holds Pakistan responsible for carrying out state-funded terrorism. 

While announcing the new measures, Foreign Secretary Misri stated that, “The integrated check post at Attari will be closed with immediate effect. Those who have crossed over with valid endorsements may return through that route before 1st May 2025.”
