Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the Centre on Wednesday enhanced the security cover of External Affairs minister (EAM) S Jaishankar.
It has been reported that following the central intelligence agencies' inputs, the minister's convoy will now have two additional bulletproof vehicles in his convoy during nationwide movements.
70-year-old Jaishankar is currently under 'Z' category armed protection from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The move came days after a military standoff between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack as a threat evaluation highlighted heightened risk levels for senior Indian officials involved in national security and foreign policy.
Back in 2023, the Union home ministry upgraded Jaishankar's protection level from the Y category to the second-highest Z following a similar review and inputs on his threat perception.
Jaishankar is among over 210 high-profile individuals under CRPF protection, including home minister Amit Shah, road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
The Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) VIP security wing provides armed cover to the minister and his current security detail includes over a dozen armed CRPF commandos. The VIP security cover under the central protection list begins from Z-plus (Advanced Security Liaison) to Z-plus, Z, Y, Y-plus and X.
