Rescue workers concluded their 23-hour rescue operation on Sunday evening in Mohali after pulling out the body of a man and a fatally injured woman from under the rubble. The death toll in the Mohali building collapse reached two after the body of a man was recovered on Sunday morning. At least five people are feared to be trapped in the rubble of the building collapse as search and rescue operations continue.
A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident which, according to a preliminary inquiry, occurred during alleged unauthorised digging in the adjacent plot belonging to one of the owners of the building, PTI reporter.
A multi-storey building collapsed on Saturday evening in Sohana village of Punjab's Mohali district. Rescue workers continued their mission overnight to look for people trapped in the debris.
Based on the visuals of Sunday morning, the rescue operations continue with teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Army.
The first victim has been identified as a 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh. The second victim, found on Sunday, has been identified as a man from Ambala, Haryana.
The building collapse occurred due to excavation work being carried out in the adjacent plot by the owners of the building, said police. Police officials further added that the two owners of the building have been booked.
Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh, have been booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) act.
Punjab Chief Minister and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann has expressed his grief over the incident, promising action against the culprits.
"Received sad news of an accident of a multi-storey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). Full administration and other rescue operations teams are deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration. We pray that there is no loss of life and property, action will be taken against the culprits. People are requested to cooperate with the administration," said Mann on social media platform X.
