A starting report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has questioned the original conclusions about the scene of the crime, saying, 'No evidence of a possible struggle or resistance was found' in the seminar room of Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
The report, exclusively accessed by India Today, was submitted to the CBI on September 11.
The victim's body was discovered in the seminar hall of the medical college on August 9. Both the West Bengal Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier believed the seminar hall was the site of the crime and based their investigations on that assumption. However, the CFSL's forensic findings now challenge this premise.
Details Of The CFSL Report
According to the CFSL report, India Today report, "The cut mark portions observed on this mattress were reasonably corresponding to the head and lower abdomen area of an injured victim who stated or happens to be lying on this mattress. The evidence of a possible struggle shown by the victim with the assailant or fight in between them was found missing in the shown area of occurrence, i.e., the wooden stage mattress and the adjoining area inside the seminar hall."
The forensic analysis has further revealed that "no biological stains" were found on or around the wooden stage or elsewhere on the seminar room floor, except for the mattress on the wooden stage.
These findings have deepened the mystery surrounding the case. It casts doubt on whether the crime actually took place in the seminar hall.h
In addition, the report emphasised the improbability of the accused entering the seminar hall without being noticed.
"There is less possibility that someone (in the presence of the official attendees present in the 24x7 operational hospital corridor, doctor's duty-nursing station area) could enter into the seminar hall unnoticed, for committing offence," the report stated, as quoted by India Today.
Calcutta HC To Hear The Plea
The Calcutta High Court is set to hear the victim's family's request for a fresh investigation. The court will consider the plea on January 2.
Case Background
A 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered in the college building on August 9 this year. Her body was discovered in a seminar room on campus. A 33-year-old male civic volunteer was arrested by the Kolkata police on August 10 - a day after the incident - on suspicion of committing the crime.
Three days later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, citing a lack of confidence in the city police's probe.
The case triggered a 42-day strike by junior doctors across West Bengal who demanded that a thorough probe be conducted and the campus security be enhanced.
The incident has sparked widespread debate over the safety of women and medical professionals in India. The incident led to a series of agitations in the country and abroad.
