The Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services encountered major outages across various apps in India on Saturday, marking the fourth such technical snag within a month.
Commenting on the development, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the governing body which oversees the UPI infrastructure, officials are currently working to resolve the disruption.
"NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused," it said in a post on X.
According to outage-tracking site DownDetector, users began reporting issues with UPI transactions around 11:26 a.m. The outage peaked at around 11:40 a.m., with over 222 reports of failed digital payments.
As per media reports, today's disruption marked the fourth occasion in last one month where technical glitches on the payment platform hampered the popular real-time payment system.
On March 26, UPI services were down for a few hours followed by a similar incident on March 31 when users faced trouble again. According to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the glitch stemmed from banks' delays during the financial year-end rush. Later, on April 2 a similar incident occurred due to "latency in the UPI network"
Several social media users reported difficulties making payments on third-party platforms such as Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe.
