Uttarakhand is all set to become the first state of India to implement the Uniform Civil Code. Taking to social media platform X, the state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that UCC will be implemented across the state on Monday - January 27, 2025.
"The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state from January 27, 2025, making Uttarakhand the first state in independent India where this law will come into effect," said Dhami on X.
This implementation also comes a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Uttarakhand.
As per Dhami, all preparations to implement the Uniform Civil Code have been completed, including the approval of the rules of the act and training of officials.
"UCC will bring uniformity in the society and ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens. Uniform Civil Code is just an offering made by our state in the great yagya being done by the Prime Minister to make the country a developed, organized, harmonious and self-reliant nation," the CM added further.
This act, once implemented, will apply to all residents of Uttarakhand, barring members of the Scheduled Tribes community under Article 342 and Article 366 (25) of the Indian Constitution and protected authority-empowered persons and communities under Part XXI.
Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code has a total of 392 sections, divided into four parts and seven chapters.
Across these sections, the state government has covered issues such as equal rights, especially for women in matters of property, marriage, divorce and alimony.
Under this UCC, polygamy has been banned and the marriageable age for men and women has been set at 21 years and 18 years, respectively. Registration for marriage would also be made mandatory under the law.
The law sparked controversy due to its requirement for live-in couples to register their relationship with the government. Failure to do so, would result in a fine of Rs 10,000, imprisonment of three months or both.
