The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, came into force today, a notification of The Gazette of India announced.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 is now in force as of April 8, 2025, according to a notification.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, came into force today, a notification of The Gazette of India announced.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 (14 of 2025), the Central Government hereby appoints the 8th day of April, 2025 as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” the notification said.
The Gazette of India is an authorised legal document of the Government of India where the government's statutory orders and notifications are published.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the amendments in Waqf Act in 2013 were aimed at appeasing Muslim fundamentalists and land mafia. "New Waqf law will secure sacredness of Waqf and also rights of poor, backwards and women among Muslims," PM Modi said at the News18 Rising India Summit.
Janta Dal (United) has witnessed a wave of resignations since the Waqf Amendment bill was passed. As of now dozens of Muslim leaders and workers, who held positions in the JD(U)라이브 바카라 state committee in Bihar have left the party.
However, despite the resignations, JD(U) Leaders remain confident about the support for Nitish Kumar from the Muslim community. Ashraf Ansari, President of JD(U)'s Minority Cell in Bihar told 바카라, “The Muslim community is with Nitish Kumar. Those leaving are district-level leaders, neither well-established nor widely recognised. Their exit will not impact the party, as they have shifted between multiple parties even before.”
After the bill was passed in both the houses, police forces were on high alert across multiple cities in the country to prevent any protests or violence following the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by Parliament.
Additional police personnel have been stationed in sensitive areas of Delhi and several cities in the country in anticipation of Friday prayers. These areas include Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar, and key educational institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia.
Thousands of people took to the streets in Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad on Friday after weekly prayers to protest the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. In Kolkata, visuals showed large crowds waving the national flag and holding up posters that read "We reject the Waqf amendment" and "Reject Waqf Bill" as they gathered at public meeting sites. Many of these protests, according to news agency ANI, were organized by the Joint Forum for Waqf Protection.
Multiple pleas have been filed in the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Bill, which is now an Act. Last week, Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi moved the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
Over 10 petitions, including those by politicians and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, have been filed in the top court challenging the validity of the newly-enacted law, according to PTI.
Jawed라이브 바카라 petition argued that the Bill imposed "arbitrary restrictions" on Waqf properties, undermining the religious autonomy of the Muslim community. He claimed that it discriminated against Muslims by imposing restrictions not present for other religious endowments.
Jawed, the MP from Kishanganj, Bihar, who was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Bill, also contended that it introduced limitations on creating Waqfs based on religious practice duration.
In a separate plea, Owaisi argued that the Bill stripped Waqfs of protections given to religious and charitable endowments of other religions, which he described as discriminatory and a violation of Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution.
