Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the passing of the bill and stated that this will now help the Waqf Act be more transparent and accountable.
"The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity," he stated on X.
Under this legislation, the waqf act will reform the governance of waqf properties, enhance transparency in its dealings and ensure greater representation from different Muslim sects.
Furthermore, this legislation also calls for the inclusion of non-Muslims and women in the governing bodies.
However, as the bill gets signed into a law, opposition members have challenged it and moved the Supreme Court.
Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi and Aam Aadmi Party's Amanatullah Khan havemoved separate petitions before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025.
