'War Is Not Romantic, Diplomacy Must Prevail' Gen Naravane

Former Army Chief cautions against glorifying conflict, urges peaceful resolution amid post-Pahalgam tensions

Former Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Sunday said that war is not romantic and should not be glorified like a Bollywood movie, according to PTI.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India in Pune, he said questions being raised about the suspension of hostilities between India and Pakistan overlook the serious and traumatic consequences of war.

According to PTI, Naravane said that although he would go to war if ordered, it would never be his first choice. He emphasised the importance of diplomacy and resolving conflicts through dialogue.

Referring to the impact on civilians, especially those in border areas, he said people, including children, live in fear due to shelling and many suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sometimes for decades.

He added that national security is a shared responsibility and urged for peaceful conflict resolution not just between nations but also within communities, states, and families.

His remarks come in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, launched by India on May 7 in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, which targeted seven terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
