The introduction of the 2025 Waqf Amendment Act (WAA) is mired in controversy. With all Opposition parties against the Act, the clash of anti and pro-WAA sentiments across India has only been surpassed by those seen during the CAA-NRC protests of 2020. Political parties across the spectrum, excluding the BJP, have called the Act “anti-Muslim.”
Kaimun Nisa, a 60-year-old woman lives near Subhash Marg and her house was razed during the CAA-NRC protests in which she took part. She said that, "waqf is a different matter altogether. Here, people are being divided after temple-mosque, Hindu-Muslim issues."
She added, "There are no jobs here, no employment, no education and people are just being made to fight over temples and mosques."
Shaista Amber, Head of the All-India Muslim Women's Personal Law Board said that, "The condition of Muslims is worse than that of Dalits. What have the political parties done about it? It was their responsibility and duty." She added, "even after all the riots, even after everything, divisive politics continues—just like the British used to do."
