The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), along with 37 other farmer unions, has called for a week-long sit-in protest in Chandigarh starting Wednesday to push for their demands. The farmers also plan to stage a protest outside the official residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Sector 2.
In response, the police have established 18 major checkpoints, including near the Punjab CM라이브 바카라 residence, Housing Board Light Point in Manimajra, Naya Gaon Barrier, Mullanpur Barrier, Togan Barrier among others. Water cannons, Vajra vehicles, and fire tenders have also been deployed at critical locations.
To preempt the protest, the Punjab government conducted early morning raids, detaining several SKM leaders, including 15 from Mohali. Among those detained were Bharatiya Kisan Union district head Kirpal Singh Siau, state leader Parmdeep Singh Baidwan, and Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Dakonda) district head Jagjit Singh Jogi Karala. The detentions took place between 3 am and 6 am on Tuesday.
The Chandigarh administration has denied permission for the farmers to hold their sit-in at the Sector 34 grounds, deploying over 1,900 security personnel and implementing multi-layered barricades along the Chandigarh-Mohali border to prevent the protesters from entering the city.
Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav told Hindustan Times, “We have not granted any permission to farmers to stage a protest in Chandigarh and will stop them at any cost.”
According to intelligence reports, around 10,000 to 11,000 protesters, including 175-200 women, are expected to travel in tractor-trailers, SUVs, and other vehicles. The farmers plan to gather at Gurudwara Amb Sahib in Mohali before heading toward Chandigarh.
