In an unexpected move, Manipur CM N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday. Singh's resignation comes amidst escalating ethnic violence in the northeastern state, which has claimed hundreds of lives over the past two years. Meanwhile, the resignation of Singh has fueled speculation that President's Rule may soon be declared in the state.
In 2017, Biren Singh became the Chief Minister of Manipur for the first time.
Media reports suggest that discussions are being held on selecting the candidate for the next chief ministerial post of Manipur, who could be either Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh or Urban Development Minister Yumnam Khemchand.
However, BJP sources told The Indian Express that the decision would be taken after much deliberation and careful discussions.
Speculation is rife that President's rule may be enforced for an initial period of four to five months, with the possibility of extension until a consensus candidate for Chief Minister is selected. President라이브 바카라 Rule can be renewed for up to six months at a time.
Imposing President라이브 바카라 Rule may not be a good look for the BJP. He argued that the state BJP should run the government, noting that there is no major political crisis or worse law and order situation than what the state has already been facing for months, reported The Indian Express.
The budget session of the Manipur Assembly was scheduled to begin on Monday but has been postponed following Biren Singh's resignation. However, according to reports, the session will continue after the appointment of a new Chief Minister.
Manipur has witnessed violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities of the valley. As the clashes escalated over time, the state imposed curfews and took several steps, like shutting down the internet several times, to protect citizens. What began as localised clashes in May 2023 escalated in 2024, spreading to previously peaceful areas like Jiribam district, near Assam.
Several videos have been present on social media for months that depict the situation of violence.
In June, the discovery of a man's body in Jiribam triggered a fresh wave of violence, leading to widespread arson, gunfights, and the displacement of over 1,000 people.
