The 24-year-old from Kerala is the lone Indian alive in the men's singles event. Compatriots Lakshya Sen (2022 champion), Kidambi Srikanth (2015 champion), HS Prannoy, and Priyanshu Rajawat have suffered opening round exits.
George and Srikanth entered the fray after the withdrawals of top-seed Shi Yu Qi of China and Indonesian Anthony Ginting. On the opening day of the BWF Super 750 event, George defeated Yushi Tanaka of Japan in an hour and 11 minutes long thriller (21-19, 14-21, 27-25) to make the second round.
The Kochi resident has two BWF World Tour titles -- Odisha Open 2022 and Indonesia Masters 2023 -- both Super 100 events.
The world number 38 has a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head record against his higher-ranked opponent Lanier (17) with both wins coming in three games, each time from a game down -- 12-21, 21-18, 22-20 at Indonesia Masters 2024 qualifiers and 18-21, 22-20, 21-18 at Swiss Open 2024.
Lanier defeated fourth-seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand 21-11, 14-21, 21-14 in their opener. The 19-year-old is the first-ever French player to win a BWF World Tour Super 750 event, a feat achieved at Japan Open 2024.
