George, ranked 41st in the world, saved as many as six game points to beat French teenager Alex Lanier in the second round, 22-20 21-13 win in 46 minutes. The 24-year-old had earlier survived a three-game thriller, 21-19, 14-21, 27-25 in the opening round, against Yushi Tanaka of Japan.
"At 14-20, I was just taking one point at a time, not thinking about the lead, whether I'm trailing,' Kiran said after beating 19-year-old Lanier who had defeated reigning champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the first round. "I was just playing one point at a time. I think that helped me to secure the game."
Hong Yang Weng, meanwhile, got the better of Malaysia's Jun Hao Leong 21-18, 21-12 to make the last eight. The 25-year-old is currently enjoying a career-high ranking, 15th, and was part of the Chinese team that won the Thomas Cup last year.
This will be the third meeting between Kiran George and Hong Yang Weng. The Indian shuttler won the first meeting (21-11, 21-19) at the Thailand Open 2023, but lost at the Indonesia Open 2024 (21-11, 10-21, 20-22). Expect a thriller today.
Other Indians to feature in the Indian Open 2025 quarter-final rounds are former champions PV Sindhu in the women's singles and the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
