Sindhu, 29, is making a return to action at the BWF Super 750 after missing the season-opening Malaysia Open following her wedding. The Indian star, now dropped to 16th in the BWF rankings, defeated Sung Shuo-yun of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 22-20 in the first round.
The 2017 champion is one of the two Indians to enter the second round. Anupama Upadhyaya beat fellow teenager Rakshitha Ramraj (17) in straight games (21-17, 21-18) in an all-Indian first round match. The 19-year-old from Almora will take on sixth seed Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan for a place in the quarter-final.
World No. 46 Suizu got the better of Canadian Wen Yu Zhang 21-5, 21-8 in the opener. The 21-year-old finished runner up at Malaysia Super 100 2024. This will be the first meeting between Sindhu and Suizu.
