The Kiwis took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series courtesy a commanding nine-wicket win in the opener at Wellington. Matt Henry and Will Young were the architects of the comprehensive victory.
Henry scalped four wickets (4-19 in 10 overs) as the home team bundled out the Lankans for 178 runs in 43.4 overs. Young then anchored the chase beautifully, staying unbeaten at 90 off 86 balls as the BlackCaps romped home in 26.2 overs for the loss of just Rachin Ravindra's wicket. Mark Chapman (29 not out off 36) was there at the crease alongside Young during the winning moment.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner was thrilled to have provided some entertainment in Wellington as the team began its preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy. "I think as a collective it was very pleasing," he said.
"[The Champions Trophy] sits in the back of our minds, but it's a pretty important series here for us. We want to put on a bit of a show for the crowd in our home summer. So it's a great start here, now we get to Hamilton. It's probably going to be a different picture all over again, and a new challenge.
"It was pretty cold out there. So to see everyone stick around, even right at the end, it was pleasing, it was amazing for us. It's a great spectacle to play in front of," Santner added.
As for the tourists, after suffering a 1-2 defeat in the T20I leg, now is the time to prevent another series loss. "It was windy, and it was going to be hard for us, but that's not the reason [we lost]," said Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka after the defeat in the first game.
"As professionals, we have to play in any kind of situation and any kind of conditions. Bad batting put us in this situation. We have to eradicate the bad habits, and we have to reconnect the good habits. That's what we are looking for," he added.
A loss in Hamilton for SL would render the third and final ODI a dead rubber, so to say, as the series would then be decided 2-0 in the hosts' favour.
