The high-octane clash will be the first ever meeting between Bayern and Leverkusen in a major European competition. The German league holders appear to have the upper hand based on recent results though. Under manager Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen are undefeated in their six matches against Bayern across all competitions (three wins, three draws).
In fact, Leverkusen have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four matches against Bayern, after not keeping any in their previous 15 games against them beforehand (42 goals conceded in those 15 matches). Alonso's side enter the game on the back of a thumping 4-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt in the German top-flight, and Alonso deems it the ideal tune-up for the upcoming Champions League clash.
"We are ready for the next challenge – in Munich, against the best team in Germany. We will see. We are in a good moment, and we will give it our all," he said. "Are we favourites? We are not foolish. We are playing against Bayern. We have to show them a lot of respect," Alonso added.
Home team Bayern, meanwhile, are on top of the Bundesliga standings currently with 61 points from 24 games, and came from behind to prevail 3-1 at VfB Stuttgart in their previous encounter. The upcoming face-off with Leverkusen is one of three games in the space of six days for the Bavarians.
"You just have to stay calm and prepare for the next game and that's what the team has done and will continue to do," he added. "That's what I've done throughout my career and that will never change, no matter what happens."
