Jamshedpur FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant have faced each other 10 times in the Indian Super League, with the Mariners winning five times and the Red Miners emerging victorious thrice. Two encounters have produced draws. More recently, JFC have not secured a victory in their previous six matches against MBSG, losing on four instances.
Here's how the two teams line up ahead of kick-off in Jamshedpur:
Home support will not be in short supply for Jamshedpur FC tonight, as we have a capacity crowd at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. The franchise notified earlier today that all tickets for the match were sold out, and we are expecting an electric atmosphere for what should be a cracking encounter.
A good, fast start from Jamshedpur with skipper Javi Hernandez surging ahead and sending in a hopeful cross with barely a minute on the clock. Nothing comes of it but the hosts would look to sustain this early rhythm against a dangerous Mohun Bagan.
After the Red Miners' early running, the visitors respond by taking charge of the ball to control proceedings a tad bit more. In the first 12 or so minutes, Mohun Bagan enjoy 79 per cent possession as against Jamshedpur's 21. No harm done on either end yet, however.
The Furnace comes alive! Javi Siverio is the man to make it happen. The 27-year-old Spaniard pounces on a headed pass from Stephen Eze in the box and put Jamshedpur ahead in the 24th minute. The forward's header beats custodian Vishal Kaith all ends up, and Bagan are forced onto the backfoot despite all the early possession.
It's a setpiece that brings Bagan back on level terms. Ashutosh Mehta (Jamshedpur) is booked for a dodgy challenge that could well have been a red card. Jason Cummings steps up for the resulting free kick and his left-footed shot floats into the top right corner in the 37th minute. The first half ends at 1-1. We are having a game worthy of a semi-final.
The mid-game interval ends, and Jamshedpur are now attacking from left to right. Cummings's goal silenced the home crowd momentarily but the spectators have found their voice again, and could play a key role in the second half.
Khalid Jamil appears to have altered his strategy for the second half. Jamshedpur FC are trying to block out any and all goal-bound attempts from Mohun Bagan, even if that means subduing their own attacking radar. Let's see how that plan works out for the Red Miners.
We are nearing the end of normal 90 minutes, and the scoreline continues to be locked at 1-1. This is still only the first leg, of course, and a decisive result not mandatory. But an advantage going into the Kolkata leg could be invaluable for either side.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Jamshedpur captain Javi Hernandez pounces on a smart assist from substitute Ritwik Das and drills it in from his left foot in the 90th minute. The hosts are ahead, with four minutes of added time to come, and the JRD Tata Sports Complex Stadium springs to life.
The final whistle is blown amid drama as Stephen Eze is handed a yellow card at the fag end for apparent mischief in the Bagan box. It doesn't matter much for the Red Miners, though, as they win the first leg 2-1 and head to Kolkata with a slender but crucial one-goal advantage.
Mohun Bagan will host Jamshedpur FC for the second leg of the semi-final tie on Monday, April 7 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. The home team will need to overturn JFC's one-goal advantage to win or force extra time at the least. As for the Red Miners, a win or a draw would do nicely.
