Pep Guardiola's Manchester City will look to bounce back from their 2-4 thrashing in midweek to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, when they welcome Enzo Maresca's Chelsea for the Premier League fixture to be played on Saturday, January 25 at the Etihad Stadium. (More Football News)
For Chelsea, Maresca arrives at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday with holders City 12 points off league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in the chasing pack.
City, who placed fifth in the table and two points off Blues, face a must-win game in Belgium against Club Brugge or face elimination from the Champions League at the first hurdle.
“The next two games are really really important, finals with us,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday “Our people will support us. We are very close in the table [to Chelsea] even with the big big problems we had in the recent past.”
However, Guardiola has been backed by the club owners to steady their faltering ship in January with the arrivals of Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush have all been acquired at a cost of more than $150m.
Club captain Kyle Walker has left for AC Milan on loan.
As for Chelsea, Maresca was Guardiola's assistant at City before the former left for a managerial role at Leicester City and then swapping King Power Stadium for Stamford Bridge in the summer last year.
This isn’t the first meeting between the pair this season, however. The reigning champions won 2-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season thanks to goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic.
City are unbeaten in 10 games against Chelsea, winning eight. Blues' last win against City was the 1-0 win in the Champions League in 2021.
