The Gunners have been on the lookout for a new sporting director after the departure of Edu to Nottingham Forest last year and will land Berta as the ideal replacement.

The Italian will be tasked with Arsenal's summer incomings and outgoings alongside their manager Mikel Arteta and the owners, Josh and Stan Kroenke.

Who is Andrea Berta?

The Italian worked in a banking sector, before taking up a role in football with local club FC Carpenedolo. Following an impressive role with the lower-league side, Berta moved up the ladder by landing a role as Parma's Sporting Director in 2007.

However, Parma suffered relegation to Serie B during the Italian's first season at the club, but they won promotion the following year but Genoa poached Berta, where he worked with now-Atalanta boss, Gian Piero Gasperini.

Berta helped Genoa find their feet in Serie A and this attracted many clubs, with La Liga side Atletico Madrid winning Berta's signature in 2013.

Berta worked as Atletico's technical director before being promoted as sporting director in 2017. During his time, Atletico won seven trophies including two La Liga titles, and the Italian also won Sporting Director of the Year at the 2019 Globe Soccer Awards.

In January of this year, Berta and Atletico mutually terminated their contracts. Some of the signings that Berta has landed include - Antoine Griezmann, Rodri, Jan Oblak, Luis Suarez, Rodrigo de Paul, Marcos Llorente and Julian Alvarez at Atletico Madrid.
