Khelo India Para Games 2025: Haryana Retain Team Championship; Tamil Nadu Runners-Up

The Khelo India Para Games 2025 concluded on Thursday, with Haryana retaining the top position in the team standings by securing 34 gold medals. Tamil Nadu finished second with 28 golds, while Uttar Pradesh took third place with 23 golds. (More Sports News)

The event, held over eight days across three venues in New Delhi—Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, and Karni Singh Shooting Range—featured approximately 1,300 athletes competing in six disciplines.

A total of 18 national records were set during the games. In Para Powerlifting, gold medalists included Jaspreet Kaur (Punjab), Manish Kumar (Haryana), Seema Rani (Punjab), and Jhandu Kumar (Bihar). In athletics, 14 athletes achieved new national records:

Notably, 12 female athletes were among those who set new records, highlighting the growing prominence of women in Indian para sports.

The games saw the distribution of 596 medals: 189 gold, 189 silver, and 218 bronze. Male athletes earned 346 medals (110 gold, 109 silver, 127 bronze), while female athletes secured 250 medals (79 gold, 80 silver, 91 bronze). Haryana led the overall tally with 104 medals (34 gold, 39 silver, 31 bronze). Tamil Nadu followed with 74 medals (28 gold, 19 silver, 27 bronze), and Uttar Pradesh amassed 64 medals (23 gold, 21 silver, 20 bronze).

Giriraj Singh, chef-de-mission for Team Haryana, expressed gratitude towards the nation's support and credited the Government of India and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for their pivotal roles. He emphasized that initiatives like the Khelo India Para Games provide athletes with opportunities to compete in international events such as the Paralympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.

Raja, chef-de-mission for Team Tamil Nadu, praised the team's performance and lauded SAI for organizing a well-executed tournament, noting the excellent arrangements for travel and food.

Mudrika Pathak, representing Team Uttar Pradesh, highlighted the tournament's role in offering grassroots-level players a significant platform and extended appreciation to the organizers for their efforts.

On the final day, Gujarat dominated the table tennis events at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, securing 21 medals, including four golds, five silvers, and 12 bronzes. Haryana also performed well, earning eight medals, with three golds.

Yezdi Aspi Bhamgara, a 50-year-old athlete from Gujarat with cerebral palsy, clinched the gold medal in the Men's Class 6 category, defeating teammate Vikas Thakur 3-1. Reflecting on his journey, Yezdi stated, "Winning the gold medal here feels good because I have worked hard to reach this stage. I practice for three to four hours every day, because of which I am here."

Similarly, 29-year-old Bhavika Kukadiya from Surat, who also has cerebral palsy, secured gold in the Women's Class 6 category by overcoming Jamani Nirjahan Noorali 3-1. Bhavika shared, "I have been playing table tennis for the last five years... By god's grace, I have been able to represent the country at an international level as well now."

The Khelo India Para Games 2025 not only showcased exceptional athletic performances but also underscored the resilience and determination of India's para-athletes, paving the way for their future successes on international platforms.
