San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle was named the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2024-25 season on Wednesday (India time). The 20-year-old followed the footsteps of teammate and last season's recipient Victor Wembanyama, making the Spurs the first outfit to produce back-to-back winners since the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014-15 (Andrew Wiggins) and 2015-16 (Karl-Anthony Towns). Picked by San Antonio in the 2024 draft, Castle is the fourth Spurs player to win the award after Wembanyama, Tim Duncan (1998), and David Robinson (1990).

In the NBA 2024-25 regular season, according to the NBA, "Castle averaged 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 0.91 steals in 26.7 minutes in 81 games. He led all rookies in points per game, ranked fourth in assists per game and finished sixth in steals per game. Castle also had the most total points (1,190), steals (74) and free throws made (249) among first-year NBA players."

Launched in 1953 as the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, in honour of the former Philadelphia Warriors head coach who died in 1979, it's now known as the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy. Chamberlain himself won this annual award for his exploits in the 1959-60 season. Well, Chamberlain was the first player in NBA history to win the MVP as a rookie, a feat only matched by Wes Unseld in the 1968-69 season.
