D Gukesh on Thursday became the youngest ever world champion in the history of chess as he defeated the incumbent Ding Liren. It was a thrilling 14-game encounter where both Gukesh and Liren were tied at 6.5 ahead of the final match.
The tournament seemed set to enter the play-offs as the final match was headed for a draw before Gukesh pounced on a blunder from Liren to clinch the championship. At 18, Gukesh thus became the youngest world champion and only the second from India after Viswanathan Anand to be crowned as champion.
