Day 6 of United Cup will feature the last two group ties, with Poland meeting Czechia and Great Britain facing Australia. But the business end will be the last-eight stage and onwards, which kickstarts with the power-packed face-off between Kazakhstan and Germany, and the USA vs China clash later.
China had lost to defending champions Germany 1-2 in their last group-stage tie but advanced to the quarters as the best of the three runners-up. The second-ranked Zverev recovered from a bad start to beat Zhang Zhizhen 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 but unfancied Gao Xinyu stunned German Laura Siegemund 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to even the tie. The German pair combined in mixed doubles to defeat Zhang Shuai and Zhang Zhizhen 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).
As for the United States, they sealed their berth after beating Croatia. Fritz got the USA to the perfect start, cruising past Borna Coric in straight sets to prevail 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour and a half in Perth, registering his first-ever ATP win over the Croatian despite a shaky start. Gauff then followed it up with an equally impressive win, getting the better of Donna Vekic 6-4 6-2.
In the quarter-final, Gauff will meet Gao first, followed by a match between Fritz and Zhizhen. Gauff and Fritz will then combine for the doubles rubber against Zhang Shuai and Fajing Sun.
