Internationally Acclaimed Film Santosh Blocked By CBFC For Indian Theatrical Release

Internationally acclaimed film, Santosh has been blocked for theatrical release in India by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Censors didn't approve the film for domestic release as they objected to the portrayal of police brutality, caste discrimination, and misogyny in the Shahana Goswami starrer, reported The Guardian.

Santosh is written and directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri. She called the decision by the censor board “disappointing and heartbreaking”.

She said, “It was surprising for all of us because I didn’t feel that these issues were particularly new to Indian cinema or hadn’t been raised before by other films''.

Suri also shared that the censors had demanded a lengthy and wide-ranging list of cuts that would be “impossible” to implement. Though she didn't share the exact details of the censor라이브 바카라 demands due to legal restrictions, she said that the list was very long and included concerns about themes relating to police conduct and wider societal problems.

“It was very important to me that the film is released in India so I did try to figure out if there was a way to make it work,” she added. “But in the end it was just too difficult to make those cuts and have a film that still made sense, let alone stayed true to its vision.”

She doesn’t feel that her film ''glorifies violence in a way that many other films focusing on the police have done. There라이브 바카라 nothing sensationalist about it.”

Shahana Goswami told India Today Digital that the team of Santosh doesn't agree with list of changes given by the censor board and they feel the cuts would change the film too much.

She further said that the film had received approval at the script level and now is facing problems. "It's just sad that something that has gone through censor approval at the script level should require so many cuts and changes for it to be considered okay to release in India''.

Santosh revolves around a newly widowed housewife (Goswami) who gets her late husband라이브 바카라 job as a police constable and investigates a young Dalit girl라이브 바카라 murder.

The thought-provoking film shows several evil practices in society like misogyny, discrimination against Dalits, sexual violence, mistreatment by police officers and more.

Santosh had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. It was the UK라이브 바카라 official entry for the Oscars’ international feature category. It was also nominated for a Bafta for best debut feature this year. Goswami and Suri also bagged the top honours- Best Actress and Best New Director at the 18the edition of the Asian Film Awards.
