Actor Rani Mukerji is all set to be back for the third installment in the Mardaani franchise. She is reprising her role as SP Shivani Shivaji Roy in Mardaani 3. The film was announced in August 2024, and the shooting will reportedly begin soon.

As per a report in Mid-Day, director Abhiraj Minawala has begun pre-production of Mardaani 3, and the makers are currently conducting look tests for main roles and the screenplay is being fine-tuned. The same report stated that the shooting would start by June this year.

Auditions are said to be going on in full swing as new talent will be introduced and the makers are focusing on casting a powerful villain. The production team has also finalized primary shooting locations and significant portions of the film will be shot in Mumbai and Delhi. The team is also hunting for additional locations in North India.

In 2024, Yash Raj Films shared a poster on social media, and wrote, "The wait is over! #RaniMukerji is back as the fierce Shivani Shivaji Roy in #Mardaani3. In cinemas 2026 (sic)."

Earlier, in a statement, Rani said, “It is always special to wear the police uniform and play a character that has only given me love." She also feels proud to essay the character of the feisty cop again in Mardaani 3 as a "tribute to all the unsung, brave, self-sacrificing cops who work tirelessly every single day to keep us safe".

She further said, "When we set out to make Mardaani 3, we were hoping that we could find a script that would take the experience of watching a Mardaani franchise film higher. I am really excited about what we have at hand, and I’m only hoping that the audience too feels the same after watching Mardaani 3 in theatres." Rani also called Mardaani 3 "dark, deadly and brutal".

Mardaani Part 1 released in 2014, and the sequel came in 2019. Both were well-recieved at the box office.
