Anurag Basu, born on May 8, 1970, is an Indian filmmaker known for his work in Hindi cinema. Over the years, he has established himself as a director, screenwriter, actor, and producer, gaining recognition for films that explore intense themes like passion, envy, and relationships.
After facing early challenges in his career, Basu found success with the thriller Murder (2004) and gained further recognition with Gangster: A Love Story (2006) and Life in a... Metro (2007), the latter earning him a Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay. His biggest commercial success came with Barfi! (2012), a widely acclaimed film that earned him another Filmfare nomination for Best Director. However, his much-anticipated film Jagga Jasoos (2017) received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office. In 2020, he made his debut as a cinematographer with the Netflix film Ludo, which earned him another Filmfare nomination for Best Director.
Basu was born in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh (formerly Madhya Pradesh), into a Bengali Hindu family.
