The Liberal Party and incumbent Prime Minister Mark Carney have secured their fourth term in power and are set to form the next government of Canada. However, despite their victory, the Liberals will continue their streak of forming a minority government.

For the 2025 federal elections on April 28, 2025, of 28 million registered voters, Elections Canada stated 19,155,470 voters cast their ballots. With this, the voter percentage stood at 67.15 percent, a slight increase from the 2021 figure of 62.89 percent.

With the final numbers in, the Liberal Party has secured a total of 169 seats, which is three short of the majority mark of 172. In the previous elections, the Liberal Party secured 160 seats and struck a supply-and-confidence deal with Jagmeet Singh-led New Democratic Party.

The main opposition - The Conservatives - despite their loss, witnessed a huge gain in their seats. Led by Pierre Poilievre, the Conservatives secured a total of 144 seats, a major gain compared to their 2021 win of 119 ridings.

Liberals Clinch Razor Thin Victory

The Liberal Party is all set for its fourth term as the government of Canada. Under Justin Trudeau, the party secured its first majority in 2015 with a total of 184 ridings.

However, since then, the party witnessed voter fatigue, which reflected in the elections of 2019 and 2021, forming a minority government in both terms.

For the 2025 elections, under Trudeau's leadership, opinion polls projected a major loss for the Liberal Party, the first time in 10 years. CBC Poll Tracker and YouGov polls all showed a victory for the Conservatives.

However, under Mark Carney, the Liberal Party has secured its fourth consecutive term, despite trailing behind the Conservatives by as much as 25 percentage points in January.

What Happened In The Previous Elections?

Ahead of Justin Trudeau's victory in 2015, Canada has been ruled by a Conservative Government. In the 2011 federal elections, the Conservatives formed the government with 166 seats out of 308, forming the majority.

This win marked the third consecutive win under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. NDP emerged as the second largest party with 103 seats, followed by the Liberals at 34 ridings.

After the expansion of the House of Commons to 2015 from 338 to 343 seats, under Justin Trudeau, the Liberals managed to win the popular vote and secured a majority. With 184 seats, the Liberal party marked the greatest comeback in Canadian politics.

However, in 2019, Canada marked the first election where no party secured a majority. The Liberals under Trudeau secured another term as the minority government with 157 seats. The Conservatives trailed behind at 121 and the NDP continued to witness a drastic decline in voter share.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Justin Trudeau called for a snap vote citing popularity for Liberals due to their work to recover from the shutdown. With the polls set for 2021, Trudeau and the Liberals aimed for a parliamentary majority.

However, in the 2021 federal polls, the Liberal Party once again fell short of the majority and secured 160 seats, prompting an alliance with NDP led by Jagmeet Singh. In September 2024, amid rising dissatisfation with Trudeau and the Liberals, NDP suspended its supply-and-confidence deal.

After their 2025 win, Mark Carney is all set to retain his post as the Prime Minister. If he announces a reshuffling of the cabinet, the new ministers will be sworn in by the Governor General during the official ceremony at Rideau Hall.
