As the gang unrest continues in Haiti, over 100 people, mainly senior citizens, were massacred on Sunday in the slum of Cite Soleil. As per the National Human Rights Defense Network, at least 110 people were killed after orders from Wharf Jeremie gang leader Monel "Mikano" Felix, who believed that the people had used "witchcraft" against his son.

As per the human rights organisation, Felix ordered the massacre after his child became sick. After seeking advice from a Voodoo priest, Felix ordered the execution of elderly people in the area and accused them of harming his son through witchcraft.

The attack began on Friday and Saturday. As per the rights group, all of the victims were aged over 60 and were attacked with machetes and knives. On Saturday, Felix's son also succumbed to his illness.

Cite Soleil is one of the poorest slums and the most violent areas in the Caribbean nation.

However, Cite Soleil's massacre is not the first one Felix has ordered. As per the United Nations, Felix's gang - the Wharf Jeremie - have killed around 300 people.

Along with Felix, another gang leader - Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherizier, who rose to fame during the riots earlier this year, has also been accused of ordering the November 2018 massacre in La Saline, where at least 71 civilians were killed.

More recently in October, another 115 people were massacred in Port-Sonde in the Artibonite region by the Gran Grif gang.

Haiti has been embroiled in violence since the start of this year. The violence, led by gangs across the country, began as an attack against the government and its institutions.

Taking centrestage in the unrest was the demand for Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign.
