Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) was headed for a landslide victory in general elections on Saturday, a sample count showed, giving new Prime Minister Lawrence Wong the clear mandate he was seeking, AFP reports.

According to sample results for 77 seats, the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) is projected to win 68 seats, adding to the five it secured uncontested. The opposition Worker's Party is expected to win nine seats.

According to the Singapore election commission, the sample vote count has a margin of error of 4 per cent. The final result is anticipated in the early hours of Sunday.
