Border Security Force (BSF) Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, held by Pakistan Rangers since April 23, was handed over to India through the Joint Check Post at Attari in Amritsar on Wednesday.

The BSF confirmed that the handover took place peacefully and in accordance with established protocols, as reported by PTI.

The BSF issued a statement claiming, "Today BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 1030 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols,"

The BSF Jawan's father Bhola Nath Shaw stated that, "I thank Centre and State Govt who got my son released from Pakistan and brought him back to India. Now that my son is coming back, I would like him to serve the country once again," as reported by ANI.

Who is Purnam Kumar Shaw?

Shaw, a resident of Hooghly in West Bengal, is a jawan of the 182nd Battalion of the Border Security Forces and was deployed along the international border in Punjab. He was stationed there since April 10 along with an ad-hoc team. The jawan formed part of the 'Kisan Guard' that was deployed for protection of Indian farmers.

The BSF Jawan was on duty on April 23 when he mistakenly crossed the international border near Ferozepur in Punjab. He was detained by the Pakistani Rangers, a day after the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 individuals.
