The water level in the Chenab River at Jammu's Akhnoor dropped significantly after authorities closed gates of the Salal and Baglihar dams as a coercive measures implemented on Pakistan amid escalating tension after the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

Locals gathered near the river to see the drop in water levels, and the police have warned the people against crossing the river on foot and to restrain them  from searching for gold and silver ornaments and coins.

The decrease in the water level is due to the closure of the Salal and Baglihar hydel power dams in Reasi and Ramban districts on Sunday morning, The Indian Express reported.

A senior official told the newspaper that the gates of the Baglihar Dam were lowered to curb the flow of water into Pakistan라이브 바카라 Punjab as part of a “short-term punitive measure.”

Last week, Indian authorities announced the unilateral revocation of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which manages water of the Indus river and tributaries between the two nuclear-powered nations.

Additionally, the Baglihar and Salal dams give India the ability to release water flowing downstream towards Pakistan. Pakistan had objected to the construction of these dams and took the matter to the World Bank, after which India agreed to lower the dam라이브 바카라 height by 1.5 meters. at 143 metres.

The dams still do not possess the infrastructure to hold the Chenab water for a long time, but can still disturb the flow temporarily towards Pakistan. “By doing this (closing the sluice gates), even if the choke is for a short while, we demonstrate that we will take coercive steps… The Chenab river water irrigates Punjab farmlands, and Pakistan needs to realise we mean to punish them on all fronts,” the official said to The Indian Express.

While the current rabi harvesting does not necessitate a lot of water consumption, farmers will require the river라이브 바카라 water during paddy cultivation season, which is set to begin within two months or less.

On Monday morning, with the Baglihar reservoir beginning to fill, officials opened several dam gates. According to sources, gates at the Salal hydroelectric project were also opened to let water flow downstream into Pakistan, The Indian Express reported.

A local man, Kalyan Singh, said to ANI, “Earlier, the Chenab River used to flow at a height of 25-30 feet, but now there is hardly 1.5-2 feet of water left here.” He continued to mention that he supports India라이브 바카라 decision to not supply water to Pakistan.
