A Jaguar fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in Gujarat's Jamnagar on Wednesday evening. Speaking to PTI, Jamnagar SP Premsukh Delu said that one of the two pilots ejected safely while the search for the other one is on.
"While one pilot safely ejected before the crash, another one is still missing. The aircraft caught fire after the crash landing. Police and firefighters have rushed to the spot and started searching for the missing pilot," news agency PTI quoted Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu as saying.
According to the Indian Air Force (IAF) officials, the twin-seater Jaguar was on a routine training sortie when it crashed in.
The incident took place in Suvarda village, 12 km from Jamnagar city. Video from the spot showed what appeared to be a field on fire with the cockpit of the crashed plane and its tail.
Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said the twin-seater Jaguar was on a routine training sortie when it crashed in. The rescued pilot is being shifted to hospital for treatment.
The Jaguar is a twin-engine fighter bomber, with single and twin-seat variants, which is very widely used in the IAF. First inducted in the late 70s, it has been heavily upgraded over the years.
According to a report by India Today, following the crash, a large cloud of smoke engulfed the entire area before the burning pieces and debris of the plane could be seen scattered on the ground.
This is the second incident in a month. In March, another Jaguar fighter jet crashed near Haryana's Panchkula due to a system malfunction where the pilot managed to steer the aircraft away from populated areas before ejecting safely.
The aircraft had taken off from the Ambala airbase on a training sortie.
