Pakistan has said it may suspend all bilateral agreements with India, including the Shimla Agreement, in response to diplomatic steps taken by New Delhi following the deadly terror attack in Kashmir.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Prime Minister라이브 바카라 Office in Islamabad said: “Pakistan shall exercise the right to hold all bilateral agreements with India, including but not limited to Simla Agreement in abeyance, till India desists from its manifested behaviour of fomenting terrorism inside Pakistan; trans-national killings, and non-adherence to international law and UN Resolutions on Kashmir,” the Pakistan PMO statement said.
The announcement came a day after India said Tuesday라이브 바카라 terror attack in Pahalgam had links to cross-border elements. In the attack, 26 people, including tourists and one local resident, were shot dead by terrorists.
India responded by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing diplomatic ties with Pakistan, expelling Pakistani diplomats and senior defence officials from Delhi, cancelling all visas issued to Pakistani nationals, and ordering them to leave the country within 48 hours. The Indian government also closed the Attari-Wagah border crossing.
Pakistan, in turn, took its own set of measures. It shut the Wagah border, suspended SAARC visas for Indian citizens, and closed its airspace to Indian airlines.
The Shimla Agreement, signed on 2 July 1972, was a peace treaty between India and Pakistan following the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The war broke out after India backed East Pakistan라이브 바카라 independence movement in the Bangladesh Liberation War, which ended with the defeat of Pakistani forces and the emergence of Bangladesh as a new country.
The agreement was signed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Shimla. It aimed to lay the foundation for peaceful resolution of disputes through direct, bilateral dialogue between the two countries.
One of the key points of the agreement was mutual respect for the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir as it existed after the 1971 war. Both countries agreed not to change it unilaterally, regardless of ongoing disagreements or legal claims. The agreement also called on both sides to avoid the use or threat of force, and to respect each other라이브 바카라 territorial integrity and political independence.
While the Shimla Agreement helped Pakistan move towards recognising Bangladesh diplomatically, it has not prevented military confrontations or tensions. The Kargil War in 1999 and continued disputes over Kashmir have kept relations between the two countries strained.
If Pakistan formally suspends the agreement, it would mean it is no longer bound by the commitment to handle issues with India through bilateral talks. This could allow Islamabad to push for third-party involvement in the Kashmir issue, something India has long rejected.
It could also lead to the reclassification of the Line of Control as a Ceasefire Line. Unlike the LoC, a ceasefire line is not subject to the same restrictions under international law, which could raise concerns over increased instability in the region. Diplomats have warned that the breakdown of mechanisms like the Shimla Agreement could remove one of the key barriers to full-scale conflict between the two neighbours.
