A day after India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement, Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai on Saturday announced that a DGMO-level talk with his Pakistani counterpart Major General Kashif Abdullah would be held around 12 noon on Monday, May 12.

Today's talk will mark the second time that the DGMOs of the two countries will be discussing the simmering India-Pakistan tension that escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack which claimed lives of 26 civilians.

On Saturday, May 10, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that Pakistan's DGMO contacted his Indian counterpart when the two sides agreed to halt all military actions, on land, at sea, and in the air, effective from 5 pm the same day.

"Pakistan's Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 3:35 PM earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time. Today, instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours," stated Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

What To Expect From The Meeting?

In view of the prevailing atmosphere of tension between the two neighbouring nations, the DGMOS are widely expected to discuss the ongoing developments involving India and Pakistan. As per media reports, the discussions will encompass the border situation and the violation of the bilateral understanding by Pakistan.

On Sunday, DGMO Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai recalled his conversation with his Pakistani counterpart on May 10 — when the latter had "proposed that hostilities cease".

Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai said that besides reaching a bilateral understanding, “we also decided to further speak on the 12th of May, tomorrow, at 1200 hours to discuss the modalities that will enable the longevity of this understanding.”

He, however, noted that "it took only a couple of hours for the Pakistan Army to violate these arrangements by cross-border and across the Line of Control (LoC) firing...."

Meanwhile, speculations are also there that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) suspension will possibly be a part of the agenda of the talks as India has decided to keep the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan.
