Indo-Pak Tensions: Pahalgam Terror Attack, Operation Sindoor And More | A Timeline Of The Latest Escalation

Following Pahalgam attack, India and Pakistan officially downgraded their ties, triggering a tit-for-tat visa cancellation, suspension of bilateral agreements and more. In the aftermath of the attack, several demolitions were carried out across Jammu and Kashmir targeting suspected active militants.

After four-long days of surviving a gripping fear of war stemming from the constant armed escalations at the border which originated from the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India on Saturday found a much-needed relief after the announcement of an immediate ceasefire. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has on Saturday confirmed that New Delhi has agreed to the truce.

For the past few days, the world witnessed relentless escalations between India and Pakistan after 'Operation Sindoor', India's retaliatory military strikes which targeted Pakistan's key terror bases.

Here is a timeline of how events unfolded in the past few days.

Pahalgam Terror Attack: 26 Lives Claimed

The whole nation was shaken on April 22, 2025 when suspected terrorists affiliated with Pakistan-based terror outfits Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) opened fire on a group of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam.

The attack, which is considered to be the deadliest in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike, claimed 26 lives of which 25 were tourists including a Nepali citizen and the other person was a local Kashmiri pony operator.

April 22

The deadly attack broke out as a group of terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam's Baisaran Meadow. As per the preliminary investigation, the terrorists were said to have been dressed in camouflage clothes and kurta-pyjamas.

Eyewitnesses later informed that the tourists were allegedly targeted based on their religion.

After the terrorists managed to escape, locals assisted the rescue efforts and offered shelter to the victims. Around 11 injured tourists were taken to local hospitals in Anantnag by pony-handlers via ponies and improvised stretchers.

Due to the non-motorable roads, tricky terrain and muddy stretches, emergency services and officials could only reach the site after 3 PM.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the attack in Pahalgam and stated that the death toll is yet to be ascertained.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who at that moment was on a state visit to Saudi Arabia, condemned the attack and directed Union Home Minister to visit the place and review the situation following which Shah flew to Srinagar immediately to assess the security situation.

In view of the tense situation, Kashmiri leaders such as PDP chief and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti called for a "Kashmir Bandh" on April 23, in solidarity with the victims of the attack. The move was alos supported by the Peoples Conference and the National Conference.

April 23

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortened his Saudi visit to arrived back in New Delhi and held a key security meet at the airport. The Kashmir Bnadh

Kashmir implemented the bandh, prompting a state wide shutdown for the first time in 35 years.

After preliminary investigation, Indian security officials released sketches of the three accused terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attacks. Security agencies named the accused as Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah and Abu Talha. The three militants also reportedly had code names - Moosa, Yunus and Asif.

Amit Shah visited Baisaran Meadow, the site of the terror attack in Pahalgam.

On the same day, the Centre convened an urgent Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting where PM Modi met with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Finance, External Affairs, and Defence.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) held a press conference to brief on the outcome of the CCS meeting. Led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Indian government announced five key points:

  1. The Indus Water Treaty of 1960 stands suspended with immediate effect until Pakistan takes responsibility for cross-border terrorism.

  2. The Wagah Attari border will be closed till May 1, 2025.

  3. SAARC visas for Pakistani nationals stand cancelled, barring their entry from India. Any Pakistani nationals in India on SAARC visa have 48 hours to leave the country.

  4. All Pakistani defence military, naval and air advisors in New Delhi have a week to leave as they have been declared persona non-grata. India will also be withdrawing its air defence, military and naval officials from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

  5. The diplomatic missions on both sides - India and Pakistan - will be reduced to 30, from the current 55

April 24

India suspended all visas, including the SAARC exemption visas, for Pakistani nationals in wake of the attack. Pakistanis in India were given 48 hours to depart.

Pakistan issued its response to India라이브 바카라 diplomatic measures by rejecting New Delhi라이브 바카라 unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty.

Pakistan also announced a tit-for-tat suspension of visas for Indian nationals, the suspension of trade ties and all bilateral agreements with India, including the Shimla Agreement of 1972.

April 25

Blasts were heard across Pulwama. Houses of two accused militants – Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh - blown up by security officials. On the following days, several other militant's houses were destroyed.

Pakistan started violating ceasefire at the Line of Control and resorted to gunfiring which continued for next few nights.

April 26

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made first remarks since Pahalgam attack, says Islamabad is “fully prepared for any misadventure.”

LeT offshoot group – The Resistance Front – denied involvement in the Pahalgam attack. “We unequivocally deny any involvement in the Pahalgam incident. Any attribution of this act to TRF is false, hasty, and part of an orchestrated campaign to malign the Kashmiri resistance,” read their statement

April 28

Indian government banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels such as Dawn, Geo TV, Samaa TV and more for “provocative and communally sensitive” comments.

Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly held special session for the Pahalgam attack. Passes resolution to condemn the Pahalgam attack.

Operation Sindoor

Following this attack, India and Pakistan officially downgraded their ties, triggering a tit-for-tat visa cancellation, suspension of bilateral agreements and more. In the aftermath of the attack, several demolitions were carried out across Jammu and Kashmir targeting suspected active militants.

14 days after the attack and a series of demolitions, India launched its response - Operation Sindoor.

Night of May 6 to May 7

At 1:28 AM, the official X handle of the Indian Army shared a post hinting at a retaliation. Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy together launched a series of missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Indian Army posted a picture of "Operation Sindoor" and stated "Justice Is Served". Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and other Indian leaders later released statements confirming the military strikes.

By 2:30 AM, Pakistan retaliated to firing and heavy shelling along the LoC, killing 16 people, including three women and five children.

In the morning, MEA briefing confirmed Operation Sindoor. Led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, it was revealed India targeted nine terror camps across Pakistan and PoK run by Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

The Indian armed forces targeted Sarjal camp in Sialkot, Mehmoona Joya and Markaz Taiba, Muridke, and Markaz Subhanallah in Bahawalpur in Pakistan. In PoK, the targets included Sawai Nala and Syedna Bilal in Muzaffarabad, Gulpur and Abbas camps in Kotli, and Barnala camp in Bhimber.

Throughout that day, India carried out nationwide war mock drills with air raid sirens, blackouts and mass evacuations for civil defence preparedness.

Night of May 7 - 8

Pakistan launches drone and missile strikes on Indian military installations in nine locations across northern and western states including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj. The attacks were thwarted with debris found lying across border towns in India.

May 8

Defence ministry in the afternoon confirmed Pakistani strikes and India's swift retaliation. In response, the defence ministry added that the Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised.

MEA held another briefing regarding the recent attacks, stating that the first escalation was by Pakistan in Pahalgam.

Pakistani drones were spotted in Jammu region, Punjab's Pathankot and Jaladhar and Rajasthan's Jaisalmer at night, triggering air raid sirens and enforcing a blackout across the union territory.

Defence ministry and Armed forces confirmed the presence of Pakistani drones and foil attack attempts.

Along with this, Amritsar, Barmer, Bikaner, Sriganganagar, Jodhpur and other cities along the International Border and LoC enforced a blackout.

BSF thwarted infiltration bid along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir. 7 terrorists were killed in this bid, said BSF.

May 9

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a key review meeting on airport and border security, bringing together the Directors General of the BSF and Central Industrial Security Force and the Intelligence Bureau Chief.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led a separate strategic session with the Chief of Defence Staff and the heads of Army, Navy and Air Force.

The Ministry of Defence mentioned thwarted attempts by Pakistan라이브 바카라 military to target Indian defence infrastructure. The ministry said the planned strikes were aimed at military installations in at least 15 locations, including Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, Srinagar, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Bhuj.

On the evening of May 9, Jammu region was attacked again, ensuing complete blackout. According to ANI, one Pakistani drone hit a residential area in Firozpur. Explosions could also be heard in Samba as India's air defence intercepted Pakistani drones.

A total of 228 flights were cancelled at Indira Gandhi International Airport within the span of 48 hours.

The MEA briefing confirmed that Pakistan used Turkey-made drones for its attack on Jammu and other Indian states on May 8.

Operation Bunyan Marsoos

On Saturday, Pakistan announced that it has launched a military Operation “Bunyanun Marsoos” against India. Pakistan claimed to hit several targets including a missile storage site in north India.

Indian thwarted the attacks carried out by Pakistan by destroying the drones used for the attack.

India's defence ministry confirmed 26 locations across India that were hit with drone attacks. India라이브 바카라 defence system countered most of them.

The locations include Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet and Lakhi Nala. 

Ceasefire Declaration

After a four day period of quickly escalating tensions, US President Donald Trump on May 10 announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan via X post.

"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" the post stated.

Following this, officials from India and Pakistan announced ceasefire. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that New Delhi agreed to the truce. Misri added that both sides committed to end firing on land, in the air and sea with effect from 5:00 PM onwards on Saturday.

However, within six hours of reaching the understanding, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri convened an emergency briefing and stated that Pakistan had "violated the understanding agreed to this evening."

He further mentioned that the Indian Army retaliated and dealt with the border intrusion, adding that the intrusion was "extremely condemnable and Pakistan is responsible for it."

One Day After Ceasefire

No overnight firing or shelling was reported across the Line of Control or International Border. Due to the violations, Indian states on the border such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat continue to remain on high alert.

Blackout measures were reimposed in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab after drone sightings and explosion sounds on Saturday night. Blackouts were imposed in Kutch, Jamnagar, Santalpur Taluka, Patan, Banaskantha, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Srinagar, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Pathankot, Patiala, Moga, Kapurthala, Amritsar and Muktsar districts as well.

On Sunday evening, India라이브 바카라 Director General of Military Operations Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai held a media briefing , stating that at least 35-40 army personnel were killed across LoC in artillery and small arms firing between May 7 to May 10. Additionally, the precision strikes killed more than 100 terrorists during Operation Sindoor.
