Pahalgam Terror Attack: 26 Lives Claimed
The whole nation was shaken on April 22, 2025 when suspected terrorists affiliated with Pakistan-based terror outfits Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) opened fire on a group of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam.
The attack, which is considered to be the deadliest in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike, claimed 26 lives of which 25 were tourists including a Nepali citizen and the other person was a local Kashmiri pony operator.
April 22
The deadly attack broke out as a group of terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam's Baisaran Meadow. As per the preliminary investigation, the terrorists were said to have been dressed in camouflage clothes and kurta-pyjamas.
Eyewitnesses later informed that the tourists were allegedly targeted based on their religion.
After the terrorists managed to escape, locals assisted the rescue efforts and offered shelter to the victims. Around 11 injured tourists were taken to local hospitals in Anantnag by pony-handlers via ponies and improvised stretchers.
Due to the non-motorable roads, tricky terrain and muddy stretches, emergency services and officials could only reach the site after 3 PM.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the attack in Pahalgam and stated that the death toll is yet to be ascertained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who at that moment was on a state visit to Saudi Arabia, condemned the attack and directed Union Home Minister to visit the place and review the situation following which Shah flew to Srinagar immediately to assess the security situation.
In view of the tense situation, Kashmiri leaders such as PDP chief and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti called for a "Kashmir Bandh" on April 23, in solidarity with the victims of the attack. The move was alos supported by the Peoples Conference and the National Conference.
April 23
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortened his Saudi visit to arrived back in New Delhi and held a key security meet at the airport. The Kashmir Bnadh
Kashmir implemented the bandh, prompting a state wide shutdown for the first time in 35 years.
After preliminary investigation, Indian security officials released sketches of the three accused terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attacks. Security agencies named the accused as Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah and Abu Talha. The three militants also reportedly had code names - Moosa, Yunus and Asif.

On the same day, the Centre convened an urgent Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting where PM Modi met with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Finance, External Affairs, and Defence.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) held a press conference to brief on the outcome of the CCS meeting. Led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Indian government announced five key points:
The Indus Water Treaty of 1960 stands suspended with immediate effect until Pakistan takes responsibility for cross-border terrorism.
The Wagah Attari border will be closed till May 1, 2025.
SAARC visas for Pakistani nationals stand cancelled, barring their entry from India. Any Pakistani nationals in India on SAARC visa have 48 hours to leave the country.
All Pakistani defence military, naval and air advisors in New Delhi have a week to leave as they have been declared persona non-grata. India will also be withdrawing its air defence, military and naval officials from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
The diplomatic missions on both sides - India and Pakistan - will be reduced to 30, from the current 55
April 24
India suspended all visas, including the SAARC exemption visas, for Pakistani nationals in wake of the attack. Pakistanis in India were given 48 hours to depart.
Pakistan issued its response to India라이브 바카라 diplomatic measures by rejecting New Delhi라이브 바카라 unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty.
Pakistan also announced a tit-for-tat suspension of visas for Indian nationals, the suspension of trade ties and all bilateral agreements with India, including the Shimla Agreement of 1972.

April 25
Blasts were heard across Pulwama. Houses of two accused militants – Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh - blown up by security officials. On the following days, several other militant's houses were destroyed.
Pakistan started violating ceasefire at the Line of Control and resorted to gunfiring which continued for next few nights.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made first remarks since Pahalgam attack, says Islamabad is “fully prepared for any misadventure.”
LeT offshoot group – The Resistance Front – denied involvement in the Pahalgam attack. “We unequivocally deny any involvement in the Pahalgam incident. Any attribution of this act to TRF is false, hasty, and part of an orchestrated campaign to malign the Kashmiri resistance,” read their statement
April 28
Indian government banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels such as Dawn, Geo TV, Samaa TV and more for “provocative and communally sensitive” comments.
