Dr Manmohan Singh, the renowned economist turned politician who is considered the architect of the economic reforms of 1991 that pulled India from the brink of bankruptcy, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Singh's death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where he had been admitted in the Emergency ward in a critical condition. A figure widely respected across party lines and a globally appreciated statesman, the former PM had made a huge mark in India's economic and social development.

Prime Minister, Vice President, and Home Minister also condoled the death of architect of India's economic liberalisation.
Singh's death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where he was admitted in the Emergency ward around 8.30 PM in a critical condition.
Dr Manmohan Singh, a renowned economist who was appointed the finance minister under the then prime minister P V Narasimha Rao is widely accepted as the architect of economic reforms in 1991 that pulled India from the brink of bankruptcy.
Singh is widely believed to have changed the course of India's economic trajectory as his appointment as the finance minister was a turning point in the economic history of independent India,
A former RBI governor, he is credited with allowing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), rupee devaluation, moderation in taxes, and privatisation of public sector companies.

Left parties on Thursday night condoled the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling him a leader with strong commitment to secularism.
"We express our sorrow at the death of Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. He was a leader with a strong commitment to secularism, democracy and the pluralist ethos of India," Communist Party of India (Marxist) said in a post on X.
"We express our deep condolences to his wife Smt. Gursharan Kaur, his daughters and family," the Left party said.
Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya recalled the former prime minister's remarks that "history would be kinder" to him.
"He was grilled for scams that would never be proved, for his reticence that'd be held against him as a sign of weakness. But today India will perhaps agree to his 2014 remark: 'history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media'," Bhattacharya said in a post on X.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday night visited the residence of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh to pay their respects.
Condoling the demise of his predecessor Dr. Manmohan Singh, PM Narendra Modi posted on X, "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. On the second day of the fourth test match against Australia in Melbourne, the Indian cricket team sported black armbands to honour former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who died in New Delhi.
"The Indian team is wearing black arm bands as a mark of respect in the memory of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away," the BCCI said in a statement, as per PTI.

Singh, born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), was one of the most prominent economic and financial experts and political figures of the country.
Before becoming the prime minister in 2004, Singh worked as an economic advisor, deputy chairman of the erstwhile planning commission, deputy governor in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), chief economic adviser to the Government of India and other notable posts. One of his notable works was his tenure as the Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao라이브 바카라 government in 1991 when he launched the liberalization privatization and globalization (LPG) reforms in 1991.
Condoling Singh's death, Former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai in a post on X said that India has lost one of its most illustrious sons while calling him an "unwavering ally and friend to the people of Afghanistan."
"India has lost one of its most illustrious sons. #Dr_Manmohan_Singh was an unwavering ally and friend to the people of #Afghanistan. I profoundly mourn his passing and extend my deepest condolences to his family, the government, and the people of India. May his soul find eternal peace", Karzai said on X.
Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed remembered Singh as a "benevolent father figure" and a good friend of Maldives. "So sad to hear Manmohan Singh has passed. I always found him a delight to work with, and like a benevolent father figure. He was a good friend of the Maldives", he posted on X.
The Congress on Thursday called off all official party programmes as tribute to the former PM. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said that all programmes of the party will resume on January 3, 2025.
The Union government declared a seven-day mourning in honour of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, PTI reported citing officials. The Cabinet will be meeting at 11am on Friday to pay tributes to the “architect of India's economic reforms”.
Dr Manmohan Singh's last rites will be held in New Delhi on Saturday, Congress leader KC Venugopal announced.
Expressing grief on Dr Singh's death, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken posted on X, "The United States offers our sincere condolences to the people of India for the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Dr. Singh was one of the greatest champions of the U.S.-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together in the past two decades. His leadership in advancing the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signified a major investment in the potential of the U.S.-India relationship. National flag flies at half-mast at Congress party headquarters in Delhi as mark of respect for former PM Manmohan Singh who passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92.
Expressing grief on the ex-PM's death, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "It is very painful... I have known him for several years. He was the one who brought me into politics. He kept the economy of the country safe amid a global downturn. He worked with compassion and a big heart. A great person has left us."
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and state Congress president Keisham Meghachandra condoled the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.
The CM in a post on X said, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. He was a visionary leader and his dedication to the nation have left an indelible mark on our country."
"My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones in this time of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace", he added.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also condoled the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh, highlighting his vital role in India라이브 바카라 transformative journey towards an open and vibrant economy.
In a message on X, Sawant wrote, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh Ji.”
A seven-day state mourning will be observed throughout the country as a mark of respect to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away last night, and during this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India, the Union Home Ministry has announced.
In a communication to all chief secretaries of state and union territories on Thursday, the home ministry also said that a state funeral will be accorded to Singh and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning.
"The government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Manmohan Singh, former prime minister of India on December 26, 2024 at AIIMS hospital in New Delhi," the communication said.
As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the home ministry said, it has been decided that a seven-day state mourning will be observed throughout India from December 26, 2024 to January 1, 2025.
During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning.
The national flag will also fly half-mast on the day of funeral in all Indian missions and high commissions abroad, the home ministry said.

During his tenure as prime minister, Manmohan Singh "tried very hard" to establish "some kind of peace" with Pakistan but it didn't work, former deputy NSA and his then-close aide Pankaj Saran said.
"Among the neighbours, he tried very hard to establish some kind of peace with Pakistan but it didn't work. But he tried and he was very disappointed that his efforts did not succeed. In fact, they were rebuffed with the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008 when he was prime minister, and that really shook him up very badly," he recalled.

"History will be kinder to me than the media and opposition"- these words by the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seems to have realised in just a decade. He said these back in January 2014, towards the end of his second term as prime minister, while denying that he was a ‘weak PM’. Dr. Singh retired from the upper house on April 2, 2024, at the age of 91; he was a member of Rajya Sabha for 33 years.
Dr. Singh dons many hats from a seasoned politician to a noted academician to bureaucrat who first paved the way for Indian economy to enter the era of liberalisation and then becoming the Finance Minister who finished the task at hand. Nevertheless, like any other public figure he too was doomed to face criticism or sometime even ridicule. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh's final journey will commence from the All India Congress Committee headquarters to the cremation ground at 9.30 am on Saturday, party general secretary KC Venugopal said on Friday.
Singh라이브 바카라 mortal remains will be kept at his residence 3, Motilal Nehru Road on Friday for public to offer their tributes, Venugopal said.
"At 8 am tomorrow, December 28, his mortal remains will be taken to the AICC headquarters where the public and Congress workers will have the opportunity to offer their tributes between 8.30 am and 9.30 am," Venugopal said.
"Dr Singh's final journey to the heavenly abode will commence from the AICC HQ to the cremation ground at 9.30 am tomorrow," he said.
Envoys of several countries, including Russia, China and the US, on Friday expressed condolences over the passing away of Manmohan Singh, describing the former prime minister as an "outstanding leader" and hailing his commitment to the progress of India.
In a post on X, the French Embassy in India said his leadership "bolstered India's global standing and strengthened bonds with France".
"It is a moment of poignant sorrow and grief for India and for Russia. Dr Manmohan Singh's contribution to our bilateral ties was immeasurable. His suave demeanour was always endearing as unquestionable was his expertise as an economist and his commitment to the progress of India," Russian envoy to India, Denis Alipov, said in a post on X.
US ambassador Eric Garcetti remembered Singh as a leader "who set in motion a historic chapter in US-India relations".
"Remembering the selfless contributions of our dear friend and former prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who set in motion an historic chapter in US-India relations. His dedication to India's growth and prosperity continues to inspire us. Grateful for his leadership and vision," the US envoy said in a social media post.
Expressing condolences in a post on X, Chinese envoy Xu Feihong said, "Deeply saddened by the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, an outstanding leader who is widely revered by the Indian people. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones."
Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare on Friday condoled the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh and said he always prioritised the welfare of the country and society.
“Those who are born have to die, but some leave memories and their legacy behind. Singh gave a new direction to the country라이브 바카라 economy,” Hazare told PTI in his native village in Maharashtra라이브 바카라 Ahilyanagar district.
Hazare recalled his agitation against corruption during Singh라이브 바카라 tenure in the early 2010s. The former PM invited him for talks and took quick decisions, said the octogenarian activist.
“He was against corruption and took immediate decisions concerning the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act. He always thought about the country and how best he could work for its people,” Hazare said.
Stalwarts of Indian sports paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday, describing him as a visionary, who had quiet strength and humility.

Cricket great Sachin Tendulkar termed Singh's demise as a huge loss for the country. "Dr Manmohan Singh ji's demise is a profound loss for India. His contributions to our nation shall always be remembered. My prayers are with his family and loved ones as we mourn his passing away."
Legendary golfer Jeev Milkha Singh recalled Singh's simplicity and humility, saying he was committed to national duty all his life. "Dr Manmohan Singh was probably one of the most humble men I had met in my life - a simple and extremely intelligent man. His sense of duty and responsibility shone through. The world has lost a visionary," wrote Jeev.
"Rest in peace, Dr. Manmohan Singhji. His quiet strength, wisdom, and humility were truly inspiring. I had a brief interaction with him in 2013 — he was kind, gracious, and left a lasting impression. My heartfelt condolences to his family," wrote India's ace shuttler Sindhu on 'X'.
Earlier, World Cup-winning former cricketer Yuvraj Singh called Singh a "true statesman". A visionary leader and a true statesman who worked tirelessly for India's progress. His wisdom and humility will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones," Yuvraj Singh posted on X.
When a CBI court dismissed the in famous 2G spectrum case in 2017 as "conjectured'' , Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said the verdict proved that “the massive propaganda against the UPA was unfounded”.
Singh was vindicated by the court as he had always denied any criminality in the allotments on licence allocations.
The 2G scam in 2007-2008 was about corruption in the granting of 2G spectrum licences and is widely believed to be one of the key factors that led to the loss of of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
In his 1,552-page order, special judge O P Saini in December 2017 had said there was no criminality in the allotments and the "scam by artfully arranging a few selected facts and exaggerating things beyond recognition of astronomical levels''.
Industry bodies described former prime minister Manmohan Singh as the architect of India's economic liberalisation who ushered in path-breaking reforms across all areas of the economy.
Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII said, "CII deeply mourns the passing of Manmohan Singh...An erudite, experienced leader and analytical thinker, he conceptualized India's economic resurgence with path-breaking reforms across all areas of the economy."
With his visionary leadership, he set India on a new journey of growth, all-round development and global engagement, Banerjee added.
Remembering Singh as a brilliant economist and statesman, industry body FICCI said he played a pivotal role in shaping the country's economic destiny.
"Under his leadership as Finance Minister and later as Prime Minister, India witnessed unprecedented economic growth and emerged as a global economic powerhouse," it said.
Engineering exporters' body EEPC India's Chairman Pankaj Chadha described Singh as a man of exceptional caliber who unleashed economic reforms that catapulted India into a different league.
"Singh's relentless efforts put the Indian economy on a strong footing. His series of policy measures took India out of the fiscal crisis and ushered in a phase of high growth and prosperity. The economic boom that followed the reforms significantly improved the purchasing power of the common man and saw the emergence of a growing middle class," he stated.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's 1991 budget unshackled India라이브 바카라 economy, significantly enhancing the economic prospects for hundreds of millions of Indians, first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Gita Gopinath said on Friday.

Billionaire Gautam Adani, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran and business tycoon Anil Ambani led India Inc. in paying tributes to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, describing him the architect of economic reforms and one of the tallest leaders.
Gautam Adani in a post on X wrote, "History will forever honour his pivotal role in the transformative 1991 reforms that reshaped India and opened its doors to the world. A rare leader who spoke softly but achieved monumental strides through his actions, Dr Singh's life remains a masterclass in leadership, humility and service to the nation and will inspire generations to come.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran called Singh one of the stalwarts who envisioned a new, liberalised India that is taking its rightful place in the world. "We mourn the passing away of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, one of the stalwarts who envisioned a new, liberalised India that is taking its rightful place in the world," he said in a statement.
Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said with Singh's demise the nation has lost one of its tallest leaders and finest economists. "His most defining contribution -- the epochal 91 reforms spurred a multi-decadal economic boom and more importantly reshaped the calculus of possibilities for India and Indians," Birla said in a statement.
Infosys founder Narayana Murthy described Manmohan Singh as a gentleman, a scholar, and a value-based politician. "His leading the economic reforms, under the guidance of Sri Narasimha Rao, is what laid a strong and durable foundation for the acceleration of India라이브 바카라 economic growth. Therefore, every Indian should be extremely grateful to this extraordinary individual for enhancing the prosperity of our country," Murthy said.
Reliance Group head Anil Ambani said the former prime minister's life was a testament to humility, wisdom and service to India. "As the Guru Granth Sahib says, 'Nanak Naam Chardi Kala, Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhala' - 'With the Divine Name comes eternal optimism; by You will, may there be well-being for all'. His vision and integrity will inspire generations," he said in a statement. "A guiding light has left us."
In a post on X, JSW Group Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal described Singh as "a statesman of humility" and wisdom-India owes him a debt of gratitude."
RPG Enterprise Chairman Harsh Goenka wrote, "India mourns the loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a true statesman whose quiet demeanour belied his transformative impact.".

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Friday paid glowing tributes to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, saying he was a towering figure in India's political and economic landscape whose contributions transformed the country and earned him respect worldwide.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and Congress general secretaries Jairam Ramesh, K C Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among others met here at the AICC headquarters for a meeting of the CWC to pay homage to Singh.
The CWC members also paid floral tributes to him at the party's headquarters.
In the condolence resolution passed at the meeting, the CWC mourned the loss of a "true statesman" whose life and work have profoundly shaped the destiny of India.
"Dr. Singh was a towering figure in India's political and economic landscape, whose contributions transformed the country and earned him respect worldwide. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, Dr. Singh was the architect of India's economic liberalization," the CWC resolution read.
With unmatched foresight, he initiated a series of reforms that not only saved the nation from a balance-of-payments crisis but also opened the doors to global markets, it said.
"Through his policies of deregulation, privatization, and the encouragement of foreign investment, he laid the foundation for India's rapid economic growth. Under his stewardship, India emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing economies, a testament to his brilliance and vision," the CWC said.
As the 13th prime minister of India, Singh led the country with a sense of calm determination and exceptional wisdom and his tenure was marked by sustained economic growth, global recognition and social progress, it said.
"He (Singh) steered the nation through the challenges of the global financial crisis in 2008 with strategic measures that shielded India from its worst effects. His leadership saw remarkable initiatives like MGNREGA, Right to Education, the historic Indo-U.S. Civil Nuclear Deal, National Food Security Act, Land Acquisition Act, Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme, and the 93rd Constitutional Amendment that advanced social justice for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs through Article 15(5)," it said.
Beyond his contributions as a politician, Singh was a respected academician, whose career as an economist helped shape India's policies and direction, the resolution said.
Describing former prime minster Manmohan Singh's death as a "personal loss", Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday said he was her friend, philosopher and guide and that in his death, the party has lost a leader who was the epitome of wisdom, nobility and humility.
In her message on Singh's demise, Sonia Gandhi said he leaves a void in the national life that can never be filled.
"We in the Congress party and the people of India will forever be proud and grateful that we had a leader like Dr Manmohan Singh whose contributions to India's progress and development are immeasurable," she said.
"In Dr Manmohan Singh's passing, we have lost a leader who was the epitome of wisdom, nobility and humility, who served our country with all his heart and mind. A luminous and beloved guiding light for the Congress party, his compassion and vision transformed and empowered the lives of millions of Indians," the former Congress president said.
The last rites of former prime minister Manmohan Singh will be conducted at 11:45 am Saturday at the Nigambodh Ghat crematorium here with State honours, the Union Home Ministry said.
Singh died Thursday night at the AIIMS here at the age of 92.
"It has been decided by the Government that State funeral will be accorded to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 AM on 28h December, 2024 at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi," the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a communication on Friday.
It said the Ministry of Defence has been requested to make arrangements for according Singh State funeral with full military honours
China on Friday paid tributes to former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh saying that he made a “positive contribution” to the development of India-China relations recalling key agreements signed between the two countries during his tenure to address the vexed boundary issue.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to conduct the last rites of former PM Manmohan Singh at a place where a memorial can be built.
He wrote the letter after speaking to Modi about setting up a memorial for Singh, who was a two-term prime minister revered by the people of the country.
"Apropos our telephonic conversation today morning, wherein I made a request to hold Dr Manmohan Singh's last rites, which will take place tomorrow i.e. 28th December 2024, at his final resting place that would be a sacrosanct venue for memorial of the great son of India.
"This is in keeping with such tradition of having memorials of statesmen and former Prime Ministers at the very place of their funerals," Kharge said in his two-page letter.
"Coming from a humble background and having experienced the pains and sufferings of the Partition, it is through his sheer grit and determination that he rose to become one of the leading statesmen of the world. I hope and trust that befitting stature of Dr Manmohan Singh, request to have the funeral of Dr Singh at a place where his memorial can be built, will be acceded," Kharge said in his letter to Modi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday described former prime minister Manmohan Singh as an outstanding statesman and recalled his contribution in elevating India-Russia ties to a 'special and privileged strategic' partnership.
In a condolence message, Putin said Singh accomplished a lot in promoting India's economic development and asserting its interests on the world stage.
"As prime minister and when serving in other high-ranking positions, he accomplished a lot in promoting India's economic development and asserting its interests on the world stage," Putin said.
"He also made a major personal contribution to strengthening friendly ties between our two countries by elevating them to the level of a special and privileged strategic partnership," the Russian president said.
The strategic partnership between India and Russia was elevated to the level of 'special and privileged strategic partnership during the visit of the Russian president to India in December 2010.
