US To Extradite 26/11 Mumbai Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana To India, Say Reports

A day after the Supreme Court of The United States rejected his plea seeking a stay order on extradition to India, 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana is likely to be extradited to India soon, as per PTI. Earlier, reports suggested that the extradition had already taken place. However, till the time of this report, no confirmation has been received on the same.

As per a report by The Indian Express, a team of three senior NIA officers, along with three intelligence agency officials went to the United States to get custody of Rana.

64-year-old Rana is currently lodged in the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles.

Citing sources, India Today earlier reported that Rana is expected to arrive in India early tomorrow morning, accompanied by a special team of intelligence and investigative officials.

It has been reported that, following recommendations from a US court, India has already deployed discreet high-security arrangements at two jails in Delhi and Mumbai.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is closely monitoring the extradition process alongside senior officials from the NIA and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

It has been told that upon arrival, Rana will be held in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for the initial weeks of interrogation and investigation.

The three-member NIA team was reportedly led by Inspector General-rank officer Ashish Batra. The team also included Deputy Inspector General-rank officer Jaya Roy and a deputy superintendent of police-rank officer along with the others. 

Who Is Tahawwur Rana?

The 64-year-old accused of the devastating Mumbai terror attacks is a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, He is currently lodged at a metropolitan detention center in Los Angeles.

He is known to share a nexus with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley whos is considered one of the masterminds of the 26/11 attacks.

Rana has been wanted by the Indian law enforcement agencies since a long time and the extradition of Rana was cleared by the US Supreme Court in January as it rejected his review petition in the case.

Rana's Petition Against Extradition

As per PTI, Rana in his emergency petition argued that his extradition to India violates United States law and the United Nations Convention Against Torture "because there are substantial grounds for believing that, if extradited to India, petitioner will be in danger of being subjected to torture."

"The likelihood of torture in this case is even higher though as petitioner faces acute risk as a Muslim of Pakistani origin charged in the Mumbai attacks,” the application said.

“Accordingly, petitioner certainly has raised a credible, if not compelling, factual case that there are indeed substantial grounds for believing he would be in danger of torture if surrendered to Indian authorities", the petition read.

“Further, because of his Muslim religion, his Pakistani origin, his status as a former member of the Pakistani Army, the relation of the putative charges to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and his chronic health conditions he is even more likely to be tortured than otherwise would be the case, and that torture is very likely to kill him in short order”, said the petition.

The petition also cited several medical records from July 2024 highlighting his multiple “acute and life-threatening diagnoses”, including multiple documented heart attacks, Parkinson라이브 바카라 disease with cognitive decline, a mass suggestive of bladder cancer, stage 3 chronic kidney disease, and a history of chronic asthma, and multiple COVID-19 infections.

However, the US Supreme Court denied Rana라이브 바카라 petition for a writ of certiorari relating to his original habeas petition on January 21.
