The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday, May 9 that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 to be suspended with immediate effect for a week following the tensions at the borders between India and Pakistan.

The BCCI released a statement wherein it cited national security and player safety as it's primary reason to halt the lucrative T20 league.

The decision comes after the PBKS vs DC, IPL 2025 match was abandoned in Dharamsala after there were reports of missile firings by the bordering country.

Let's take a look at the timeline of events that led to the IPL 2025 Suspension:

May 7:

  • Indian Army conducts airstrikes on terrorist camps on Pakistani soil under the name 'Operation Sindoor'.

  • This leads to many airports in the north to shut down airspace including the likes of Chandigarh, Jammu, Srinagar, Rajkot amongst others.

  • Further, BCCI moves Mumbai Indians' match against Punjab Kings from Dharamsala to Chandigarh, amidst India-Pakistan tensions.

May 8:

PBKS vs DC match is abandoned despite Punjab Kings' innings getting a solid start at 122/1 in 10.1 overs. The authorities cite floodlight failure to vacate the players and spectators from the stadium with IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal leading the evacuations.

May 9:

  • BCCI announces that the remainder of ongoing IPL 2025 is suspended with immediate effect for one week.

  • The future of IPL 2025 remains in the balance with reports suggesting that the remainder of the tournament could be played in August or in September.
